Bologna often gets overlooked for some of Italy’s other major hubs, but this city—arguably the most food-centric spot in the country—is a glorious place to spend a few days. What a view: This three-bedroom Airbnb offers an unparalleled look at Florence's San Frediano in Cestello church. In fact, the building itself was a former Carmelite monastery in the 15th century—this particular apartment is on the third floor, so pray for strength on the steps. A 15-minute drive from Siena, this renovated farmhouse has been turned into three different apartments—but we're partial to the two-bedroom located on the side of the main house. With its own shaded porch and more than 1,000 square feet, this private rental is the largest of the three. Inside, it offers a large kitchen, living area, and washing machine, in addition to two king-sized beds and a sofa bed. Outside, you'll have access to a shared grill and enormous pool, all surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. Speaking of countryside, neighborhood sheep stop by every once in a while to say hi, too.

Do not let the price tag scare you away: This Airbnb fits more than 16 in its seven bedrooms—ideal for family reunions in the Italian countryside, about an hour's drive south of Florence in Montevarchi. The 17th-century farmhouse also has a saltwater swimming pool, two fireplaces, a stone amphitheater, and 45 acres of garden and olive groves to explore. The best perk here, according to Traveler contributor Jayna Maleri, is actually the cook, Maria, who has been working with the villa for years. Small but mighty apartment close to Vatican City
A little outside of Rome's action-packed city center, this teal one-bedroom is just minutes (13, to be exact) from St. Peter's Basilica, which means being first in line at 7 a.m. to avoid the crowds will be a whole lot easier. It's also a block away from one of our favorite restaurants in the area, the unassuming, locals-only Il Sorpasso. As for the Airbnb Plus itself, you'll find a well-equipped kitchen, small living area (though you'll be spending most of your time out in the city), and bright blue bedroom. If you're a fan of antiques or art, book a few nights at this three-bedroom in Rome's Campo de Fiori neighborhood. We'd book this Airbnb for the terrace alone. Sure, the views of the Mediterranean are nice, but the terrace itself has lounge chairs, a dining area, a water feature, a plant-covered trellis, and more, which all make relaxing the day away that much easier. Inside, though, there's beautiful tile work, two sumptuous bedrooms, and a light-filled kitchen that overlooks the aforementioned terrace. Plus, if you can pull yourself away from the vacation rental, you're within walking distance of Positano's best restaurants and shopping, and just 10 minutes from the beach.

18th-century apartment in Modica
Built in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Modica's Old Town, this Sicilian apartment has original stone floors from the 18th century. Despite its history, the home is filled with modern amenities, including a washer/dryer, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. The host also offers a portable Wi-Fi device for trips to the coastal beaches, about 20 to 30 minutes away by car. Architecturally stunning, it has its own private, cobble-stoned backyard, large living spaces with impossibly high ceilings, and two bedrooms—one with a single bed, the other with a double. While farther away from major Sicilian cities (Palermo is a three-hour drive away, Catania about an hour and a half), you can fly into the Comiso airport about 20 minutes away.

Brera apartment with a film library
Those aren't books on the living room's bookshelves: It's an incredible DVD collection that may keep you glued to the couch in this Airbnb Plus. You won't have to sit still though, since this one-bedroom apartment is in Milan's Brera neighborhood, about a 10-minute walk from the Duomo and just five minutes from the Castello Sforzesco. This home is definitely on the homier side when it comes to decorations, with lots of wall accoutrements and knick-knacks, so if you're looking for a clean, hotel-like experience, book elsewhere. As for sleeping arrangements, there is one king bed and a pull-out sofa bed.

Innovative studio overlooking a canal
If you're wondering what's going on in the picture above, allow us to explain. This studio makes the most efficient use of its small size, which means the bed lowers down from the ceiling when you want to go to sleep, and floats back up when you want to use the space below. And those two tables below? Sure, you could use them as a dining table—or you could use them as the homeowner intended, as a ping pong table. The Airbnb Plus packs a ton into a tiny space, including a washer/dryer, a relatively large bathroom for the apartment's size, and a stocked kitchen. There's a fittingly tiny balcony overlooking the Naviglio Pavese canal, too.

One of our favorite colorful Airbnbs, this one-bedroom apartment in the Ponte Venezia neighborhood leans into the use of these green Moroccan tiles which cover a statement wall in the kitchen, deep green shower, and bathroom sink backsplash. Elsewhere, the design is minimal to let the green shine. As for exploring beyond the apartment, it's a 15-minute walk from Milan's iconic Duomo, and just a 20-minute walk from the Milan Centrale train station.

Retro two-bedroom within walking distance of Milan's best
There's something about the design of this two-bedroom apartment that screams dinner party. Maybe it's the deep green kitchen or the Cesca-esque dining chairs—or even the built-in bar wood-paneled bar in the living room. Whatever the case, it's a perfect spot to host a dinner in—even if it's just incredible Milanese takeout. Bedrooms are on the smaller side, but no complaints here, as you'll be out exploring or relaxing in the living room during most of your stay.

Budget-friendly, 18th-century farmhouse with a swimming pool
Le Marche is not talked about as often as, say, Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast, but the eastern region has plenty to offer visitors, including a stay at this gorgeous countryside villa. Set on one and a half acres of land, the 18th-century home can sleep nine guests comfortably across four bedrooms, with room for a few more on air mattresses. It's well-equipped for longer stays, with a laundry machine and fully-stocked kitchen. The best space, though, just might be outside: The massive pool has a diving board on one end and lounge chairs lined up on one side, looking out at the rolling hills surrounding the farmhouse.

Countryside two-bedroom cottage in Cingoli
Superhosts have all earned their distinction for a reason, but Monica and Giorgio go above and beyond: Past guests praise their detailed recommendations and hospitality, with some receiving homemade cakes and local wine during their stay. Located on a hill in the town of Cingoli, the property overlooks the Marche countryside, and has space for up to six guests across two bedrooms (both rooms have a queen bed and a single). Inside, there are plenty of unique decor touches, like the soft green kitchen cabinets, stone accents in the living room and bathrooms, and farmhouse-style sliding doors. Out back, there's a large garden, swimming pool, BBQ, and outdoor dining space.

Polignano a Mare's picturesque beaches are less than a five-minute walk away from this three-floor home, with past guests noting its prime location close to the water, restaurants, and bars, as well as the host's hospitality (Cesare has also been known to bake welcome cakes for guests). The stairs mean it's not an ideal home for everyone: the ground floor houses the dining room, kitchen, and a bathroom; the first floor has one bedroom; the second floor has another bedroom and bathroom; and above that, there is a terrace with a dining table, second kitchen, lounge chairs, and a splash pool.

16th-century farmhouse with room for 13 people
Built into a fortified 16th century farmhouse, this stunning seven-bedroom home sleeps up to 13, all of whom will have space to spread out and explore among the 85 acres of vineyards, olive groves, and orchards featuring fig, pear, and pomegranate trees. The private pool with views over the grounds is an obvious draw, as are the light, airy interiors with ultra-high ceilings. While not a Superhost, the host can help coordinate a private chef, among other add-ons, during your stay. If you want to explore off-property, you're a 30- to 40-minute drive to the beach.
